Diesel HDS Unit

In addition to the new Vacuum Distillation Unit (VDU) and Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) modifications that KPE executed, the midcontinent refiner also required a new 20,000 barrels per stream day (BPSD) Diesel Hydrodesulfurization (HDS) Unit to increase their distillate hydrotreating capacity while complying with Tier II requirements for Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD).

The HDS unit design was based on utilizing open art technology to produce the desired products. By separating the unit’s stripper and product fractionator, KPE was able to maximize air cooling, optimize steam generation, and make the most use of available space using a unique L-shaped plot layout. The diesel HDS unit was executed simultaneously with the VDU / CDU project.
